Match report Match Report. 29th May – Home v Aston Tirrold. Win (off the last ball)

Despite an injured ankle Darren Jones worked tirelessly to produce a good track, and the match was played under cool cloudy conditions, turning warmer towards the end of the day.

Aston Tirrold batted first and were tied to low scoring in the first 17 overs thanks to fine bowling spells by Ben Ralphs, Ben Goss and Rohan Iswariah (2 – 14 off 7). In the latter half of the innings no.5 batsman Small smashed the ball all round the park before holing out for 78, with the reliable Ben Ralphs taking a difficult high catch on the boundary. Good spells of bowling by Nick Page (2 – 8) and Andy Moss (2-6) wrapped up the tail. Nick Page took his first wickets for Moulsford including removing the opposition captain, thanks to a crisp catch by Malcolm Singh at square leg.

Excellent fielding, including 6 catches, restricted the visitors to 141. The young Thomas Moss and Luca Gowing fielded and threw in well, and Will Perry did a good job behind the stumps.

Moulsford started with Will and Ben Ralphs looking assured, both scoring boundaries until Will was caught on 13. Rohan came in and pushed the score along then Ben went for 20. Moulsford were on 43-3 with 100 still needed. Rohan and Adrian Allen put on a stand of 64 before Rohan was caught on the boundary for a timely 32, including a massive 6. The score went from 107 -4 to 118 – 8 when the young debutant Luca joined Adrian, needing a further 24 runs. With some sharp running between the wickets Moulsford needed 6 off the last over. After 5 balls the scores were level before Luca clipped the last ball to leg. A hurried run was taken and a shy at the stumps resulted in 4 overthrows giving MCC a memorable last ball victory. Adrian ended on 35 N.O. and Luca a match winning 9 N.O.

Highlights of the day:
• Excellent bowling by Rohan.
• Two great catches by Ben Goss, plus one each to Ben Ralphs and Malcolm.
• The final match winning over and last ball victory by the oldest and youngest player combination of Adrian and Luca.
